ReefScribe
Privacy policy
Effective date: October 10, 2026
ReefScribe keeps your tank log on your iPhone. Voice audio is processed on the device and is not kept. Your saved tests can include the final transcript and notes.
This policy explains the iPhone app, files you choose to export, optional email support and this support website. The developer responsible for ReefScribe is Chaoyi Fan. For privacy questions, contact jayfan1213@gmail.com.
Your log stays on your device
The app stores your tanks, parameter default units, test readings, units, measurement times, water-change markers, final transcripts and notes in a local SQLite database. Reminder settings, app preferences and free-test usage are also stored on your device. Apple’s StoreKit provides verified purchase information; the app uses it to recognise an unlimited-tests unlock without sending it to a developer server.
ReefScribe does not require a separate ReefScribe account and has no advertising, analytics service or tracking SDK. It does not automatically send your tank logs, readings, transcripts, notes or audio to the developer. There is no live cloud sync provided by the app.
Local records remain until you replace the log by restoring a backup or remove the app’s local data. Your existing iOS backup settings and copies you choose to create are described below.
Voice audio and microphone access
Voice entry asks for microphone permission. Audio is held in memory while Apple’s on-device English speech transcription or on-device dictation turns it into text. ReefScribe does not save raw audio recordings or upload them to the developer.
When you explicitly save a voice test, the final transcript is kept with its readings in your local log. A final transcript is text, not an audio recording. Canceling or interrupting recording does not add a test to your history.
English speech resources may need an initial download from Apple. Manual entry is available if you do not allow microphone access or if local speech resources are unavailable.
Files you export and system backups
You can choose to export ReefScribe CSV files or a local JSON backup through the iOS share sheet. CSV files include test and tank details, with embedded test data that can contain saved transcripts and notes. A JSON backup also includes default-unit templates and reminders.
Exporting does not send a file to the developer. You choose its recipient or storage location. A copy saved to iCloud Drive, another file provider, email or a messaging service is handled by that provider and any recipient under their own privacy practices.
iOS device backups, including iCloud Backup or a backup to your computer, may include ReefScribe’s local app data depending on your device settings. This is separate from app-provided cloud sync. Apple explains what iCloud Backup includes.
Restoring a ReefScribe JSON backup replaces the current local log after you confirm. CSV import adds data. Keep any exported copies securely, and inspect their contents before sharing.
Apple services
ReefScribe is free to download, with 3 saved new tests included. A one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase unlocks unlimited new tests. There is no subscription or external payment flow. Existing records remain available to read, edit, export, back up and restore without purchasing.
Apple handles the in-app purchase through the App Store and may process your App Store account, transaction, device and payment information under Apple’s privacy policy and your Apple settings. ReefScribe does not handle your payment-card details.
The app uses Apple-verified purchase information to enable unlimited new tests and to restore a previous unlock through Restore Purchases. It does not send that purchase information to a developer server. Apple’s purchase processing is separate from the tank log stored on your device.
Apple also provides App Store downloads and updates, speech-resource downloads and system backup services you enable. Those services may process download requests and device information under Apple’s policies.
Optional email support
If you email jayfan1213@gmail.com, the developer receives your email address, your message and any attachments you choose to send. Support correspondence is separate from the app’s local data.
We use that correspondence to answer your request, investigate the issue and manage related follow-up. We do not use it for advertising or sell it. Send only the information needed for your request; exports and screenshots may reveal transcripts, notes or tank names.
The support inbox is hosted by Gmail, so email is also handled by your email provider and Google’s mail services under their own policies, including Google’s privacy policy. Support messages are retained only as needed for support and applicable record-keeping obligations. You may email the same address to ask about or request deletion of your support correspondence.
This support website
This website is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. When you visit, Cloudflare may process technical request information, such as your IP address, requested URL, browser headers, request time and traffic-routing information, to serve and protect the site.
We do not add analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, forms or cookies to this website. Cloudflare’s infrastructure and any security features may process information separately under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Opening the site does not give it access to your ReefScribe tank log or microphone.
Your choices and deletion
- Use manual entry without allowing microphone access. You can revoke microphone or notification access in iPhone Settings; that does not erase tests already saved.
- Export your records if you want a copy you control. Share only the data you choose.
- To remove ReefScribe and its local app data, use Delete App in iPhone Settings. Offload App preserves documents and data.
- Deleting the app does not delete exported files, copies you shared, support emails or existing device backups. Manage those copies separately in Files, your email service, your backup settings or with their recipients.
- A later restore from an existing device or ReefScribe backup may restore data from that backup. Delete unwanted backup copies separately if you do not want them retained.
